Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival Set to Host 250 Teams

Record Setting 7th Annual Tournament attracts 16,000+ to Valley

Annapolis, MD (January 9, 2014) – Organizers with Synapse Sports and Lax West have announced the seventh annual Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival, being held Jan. 18-19, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Cal., has been expanded to include competition on 40 fields. A record 250 boys’ and girls’ teams - comprised of middle and high school players - are slated to compete in the 2014 event co-sponsored by Under Armour and Gatorade.  “We knew when we started Sand Storm in 2008 that it had tremendous potential.  A warm weather location, state-of-the-art facility, top-notch competition and detailed organization are the ingredients for success,” said Cathy Samaras, found and CEO of Synapse Sports.  “Sand Storm lived up to its potential and exceeded expectations since the beginning.  Now it has become a destination event for club teams throughout the country as the premier winter tournament on the West Coast.”

Sand Storm began as a girls’ club tournament geared primarily towards clubs from Western States. It has since expanded its reach and now includes a significant number of teams from the Midwest, East Coast and even Canada.  The number of Division I, II and III collegiate coaches scouting talent at Sand Storm has also increased significantly in recent years as the talent pool expanded.  Sand Storm added a boys’ component in 2011 and it has grown exponentially under the guidance of Michael Watson of Lax West.  In just four years, the boys’ tournament has grown from 14 to 112 teams.  “It’s a testament to the overall quality of the event.  Every team that participated the past two years had a great experience and it has spread by word of mouth that Sand Storm is a top-notch tournament in terms of a spectacular venue, precise management and strong competition,” Watson said.  “A weekend in Palm Springs is very appealing to the out-of-town teams.  I couldn’t be more thrilled with how quickly this thing has taken off.”

Sand Storm enjoys tremendous local support from the Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau and local business community.  Host hotels to the event include resort properties La Quinta Resort and Club, Renaissance Esmeralda, JW Marriott, Hyatt Regency Indian Wells, Desert Princess Golf Resort, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa and The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa, as well as Embassy Suites - La Quinta & Palm Desert, Homewood Suites Palm Desert, Palm Desert’s Marriott Courtyard, Residence Inn & Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn Rancho Mirage and Indio’s Clarion, Royal Plaza Inn and Super 8 & Suites.  Local sponsors of the event include host hotels Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, Indio Super 8 & Suites and La Quinta Resort & Club as well as restaurants including the Kaiser Restaurant Group’s Jackalope Ranch & Hog’s Breath Inn, Las Casuealas La Quinta, The La Quinta Beer Hunter Pub & Grill, Stuft Pizza Bar & Grill and the Tack Room Tavern.

XTEAM Black 14 entered Sandstorm with a hope & a dream.

HOPE:  We have enough players to play.     DREAM:  No one gets injured.

They had just enough to play – 1 goalie and 11 field players – after a basketball injury sidelined defensive midfielder Carrie Mahon (PA).  Without even considering forfeiting the opportunity to give a go at the championship, the XTEAM BLACK 14 team banned together and took to each of their games the intent on giving it the best go ‘round with the luck 13.

Just the night before, XTEAM girls from all age groups (2013-2017) came from over 20 states to celebrate at their ANNUAL GALA held at the La Quinta Resort & Spa.  3 hours of food, inspirational speeches from players, coaches and a keynote address from one of the best men’s player in history, Ryan Boyle, put the wind in their confidence sails to take on the weekend!

Four wins later, they went into the semi-final and final game with as much energy as they had had all season.  And, as icing on the motivational cake, Ryan Boyle made an appearance for a pre-game pep talk that gave the girls no reason to risk anything less than all that was left inside.

TEAM 180 gave ‘em hell and nearly tied the game at the end, but killer defensive plays by midfielder Riley Eggeman (CA) and goalie Rachel Jordan (OR) had the time run out in favor of a brave – and tired – XTEAM squad.

Coached by Liz Connelly (CA) and Jess Thornton (TN) and supported in the recruiting process by the XTEAM BLUE 14 team coach Katy Smullen (TX), this team represented all  XTEAM members – especially because among the player and coaches, there were girls from 10 different states.  Along with their tagline “LAUGH. FIGHT. RISK”, coaches at XTEAM are constantly checking in with their players:  “WHO ARE YOU?  WHAT DO YOU WANT?"  XTEAM BLACK 14 is clearly a group of brave/tough/strong girls.  And, this team showed that XTEAM wants … to work.  Winning is just extra fun.
