XTEAM Black 14 entered Sandstorm with a hope & a dream.
HOPE: We have enough players to play. DREAM: No one gets injured. They had just enough to play – 1 goalie and 11 field players – after a basketball injury sidelined defensive midfielder Carrie Mahon (PA). Without even considering forfeiting the opportunity to give a go at the championship, the XTEAM BLACK 14 team banned together and took to each of their games the intent on giving it the best go ‘round with the luck 13.
Just the night before, XTEAM girls from all age groups (2013-2017) came from over 20 states to celebrate at their ANNUAL GALA held at the La Quinta Resort & Spa. 3 hours of food, inspirational speeches from players, coaches and a keynote address from one of the best men’s player in history, Ryan Boyle, put the wind in their confidence sails to take on the weekend! Four wins later, they went into the semi-final and final game with as much energy as they had had all season. And, as icing on the motivational cake, Ryan Boyle made an appearance for a pre-game pep talk that gave the girls no reason to risk anything less than all that was left inside. TEAM 180 gave ‘em hell and nearly tied the game at the end, but killer defensive plays by midfielder Riley Eggeman (CA) and goalie Rachel Jordan (OR) had the time run out in favor of a brave – and tired – XTEAM squad. Coached by Liz Connelly (CA) and Jess Thornton (TN) and supported in the recruiting process by the XTEAM BLUE 14 team coach Katy Smullen (TX), this team represented all XTEAM members – especially because among the player and coaches, there were girls from 10 different states. Along with their tagline “LAUGH. FIGHT. RISK”, coaches at XTEAM are constantly checking in with their players: “WHO ARE YOU? WHAT DO YOU WANT?" XTEAM BLACK 14 is clearly a group of brave/tough/strong girls. And, this team showed that XTEAM wants … to work. Winning is just extra fun.
